Bungalow Remodel in Congress Park, Denver

The owners of this home saw the potential in this historic but once neglected Denver Bungalow. Creating a balance between modern necessity and respect for the Arts & Crafts charm, we opened the home up, creating a conversation between the front Living and Dining spaces, and the Kitchen. The contrast between open concept and historic home was softened with the application of beams and trim work to match the existing character. The original fireplaces were made focal points for each level - the basement one enlivened with painted brick. The sun room made into a cozy reading nook and hideaway office. The Powder hearkens back to the Arts & Crafts days, where fun mixes of gold and painted metals highlight the bold and organic wallpaper.

Situated on a beautiful and sizable corner lot, the home’s interior spaces and flow were arranged to focus on the views of both the front street draped with established trees and the private rear yard where the owners’ thoughtful landscaping have extended their indoor living spaces to the exterior with a large deck and outdoor fireplace.

The once utilitarian and very unfinished basement has been transformed into an extension of the upstairs. By re-organizing and consolidating the HVAC system, painting the fireplace brick, using lightly colored finishes and taking advantage of the windows at grade, the basement’s dinginess has been made bright and open. These moves have created cozy and clean-lined spaces for the Family Room and Guest Suite, balancing the main floor program of this historic and charming Denver Bungalow.
