This home, overlooking the Washington Park Gardens, is a charming 1920s brick home of perfect proportions and endearing historic elements. Ceramic tile sills, cedar shake and ornate interior trimwork recall the craftsmanship of a past age, though the traditionally sized spaces left the homeowners in need of a thoughtful remodel. In an effort to preserve the home's original feel from the front elevation, HQA explored a series of second floor additions. Each restricted the additions to the back of the property, minimizing the effect to the view from the street.

In the final design, with great care to maintain the home's charm and proportions, HQA opened up the Kitchen to create a seemless flow from the Living Room through the Dining Room, Kitchen and out onto a new back porch, large enough for outdoor cooking and entertaining. A trellis system provides privacy, shields the view of neighbors and guides one to the manicured back yard. The Kitchen itself has been redesigned to add work space, storage and bar seating, a more immediate relationship with the other living spaces, and fluid circulation to the finished basement.

What had been a series of smaller rooms - a mix of original spaces and an older addition - have been replaced with a cohesive Master Bedroom, Walk-In Closet, and enlarged Bathroom. An oversized soaking tub is framed with a new window, designed to match the original details.
